Yasmin Generic (available in an affordable generic formula) is an oral contraceptive regimen to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin prevents your ovaries from releasing an egg, and by changing your cervical and uterine lining to make it harder for the sperm to reach the uterus, and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.
Yasmin consists of 21 tablets, where you take one daily tablet for 21 consecutive days following by 7 white inert tablets per menstrual cycle. You should begin Yasmin either on the first day of menstrual period, or on the first Sunday after the onset of your menstrual period. If spotting or breakthrough bleeding occurs while taking Yasmin, you should continue taking the Yasmin as instructed. The bleeding is usually transient and without significance; however, if the bleeding persists or is prolonged, then you should consult your physician.
Oral contraceptives, such as Yasmin, are highly effective and the efficacy of the contraception depends upon the reliability with which they are used.
It is important to know that:
- It is recommended to take Yasmin at the same time each day, preferably after the evening meal or at bedtime.
- Although occurrence of pregnancy is unlikely when Yasmin is taken as directed, if withdrawal bleeding does not occur, the possibility of pregnancy must be considered.
- If you missed one or more active tablets or started taking them on a day later than you should have, again the possibility of pregnancy should be considered at the first missed period.
- Correct and consistent use of the method can result in lower failure rates.
In addition to being a contraceptive, Yasmin is also use by women to treat moderate acne who are at least 14 years of age. It is also used to treat symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), such as depression, anxiety, irritability, trouble concentrating, lack of energy, sleep or appetite changes, breast tenderness, joint or muscle pain, headache, and weight gain.
